Apple watch can detect serious heart disease

Updated: Mar 4

American researchers have found that "a new study by Apple has found that the Apple Watch can detect atrial fibrillation of the heart, which is the most common type of tachycardia."

This study was conducted by researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine and tested the heart rate sensor and algorithm of "Apple Watch" in more than 400,000 participants who used an app to register for the experience which lasted 8 months.

"The goal was to assess the quality of the algorithm per hour and whether it was safe," said Dr. Minto Terakihi, a cardiologist at Stanford University and co-author of the study.

Atrial fibrillation occurs when the upper chambers of the heart, called atria, are no longer synchronized with the process of pumping blood into the lower chambers of the heart. Sometimes patients experience what is called a flutter or imbalance or increased heart rate, but in many cases, they are not aware of these symptoms.
